Shaving leg hair for men: the step-by-step plan without itching & bumps!
How much body hair you want as a man is a matter of taste: what do you find beautiful and pleasant? While pubic hair trimming has become quite popular, most men leave their leg hair. There are also a lot of reasons why you should shave your leg hair. Do you want to join the group of men who shave their legs? Then check out our tips and step-by-step plan in this article, so that you have mirror-smooth legs, without irritating bumps or itching!
How many men shave their legs?
Research from Men's Health from two years ago shows that as many as a third of their male followers regularly trim their leg hair. That wasn't good enough for 15% of respondents: they attacked their hair growth with a razor blade. That means about half of men keep their leg hair trimmed, perhaps more than you would expect based on society's ideal of beauty.
But there are many reasons why you should shave your leg hair as a man. Firstly, because you like it, of course. A second reason may be your partner's preference. But you can also do it because it is fresh and hygienic when exercising (it makes it easier to keep wounds clean), because it is nicer for massages or because your muscle definition is better visible when you shave (hello, calf muscles!).
What do women think of men with shaved legs?
More than half of women had no problem with men shaving or trimming their legs, or even found it downright attractive. So if the idea that women wouldn't find it 'manly' has held you back until now, you can forget about it now.
Step-by-step plan for shaving legs for men:
Shaving your leg hair is not a complicated military exercise. But since men usually have longer leg hair than women, a little more preparation is needed to make it a pleasant and painless experience for you. Moreover, you want to end up with legs that are so smooth that you can see your own reflection in them, instead of with a moonscape of red bumps, so it is advisable to follow our step-by-step plan.
The first step in your shave is determining how rigorously you want to work with your hair growth. Do you just want to trim the leg hair a little to keep it neat? Or do you want everything off? In the latter case you can use razor blades. You also have to determine how far you are going to shave: do you only want your lower legs? Or are you really going all too way ? In that case, you shave down to your groin. Don't shave too high, because the higher you shave, the more irritation.
If you mainly want to keep your leg hair neat, but you don't want to cut and don't want to go through the hassle of buying new razor blades all the time, we recommend a good body trimmer. Choose a body groomer with different length settings so that you have control over the process and you don't accidentally cut yourself. We recommend The BushBuster 4.0 for this.
Step 1: Cut
Whether you're going to shave or trim: it's always a good idea to get started with a pair of scissors first. Leg hair is usually very long, and the last thing you want is for it to get stuck in your shaver. That is very painful. Even if you work with razor blades, it is a good idea to cut them beforehand, otherwise it will get stuck between the blades and your blade will become clogged unnecessarily quickly.
Step 2: Shower
The best place to shave your legs is in the shower. The warm shower water makes the hair softer and easier to shave. Make sure you empty your drain afterwards, because you don't want it to become clogged with body hair.
Step 3: Apply shaving cream
Whether you have dry skin or not: never shave without first applying shaving foam to your legs. Shaving foam is not only useful (so you can see exactly where you have and have not shaved), but also necessary because it hydrates your skin. This prevents itching, irritation and a pulling sensation. Make sure you go for a nice thick foam so that you can clearly see where you went. You can also apply it in sections: shaving your legs takes quite a long time, and otherwise you run the risk of it drying up quickly.
Step 4: Shave
Whoops, time for the real work! Grab your razor or body groomer and get started. If you use a razor blade, make sure it is clean and sharp, and that you have a backup on hand. Shave in the direction of the hair as much as possible to prevent ingrown hairs. Do not go over the same area more than twice, as this will cause skin irritation and a tight feeling. Be extra careful around your ankles, the skin there is extra thin and if you accidentally cut yourself it will look like you have ended up on the set of an average horror movie.
Step 5: Hydrate
It is always a good plan to rinse your legs thoroughly with warm water afterwards, then gently pat them with a clean towel (rubbing causes irritation!). Then apply a moisturizing and soothing body lotion to your long lats. This has a soothing effect and prevents itching and irritation. Do you suffer from a tight feeling between shaves? Then you should apply moisturizing cream to your legs more often.
With these tips you should be able to shave your undercarriage perfectly. Enjoy the result, because in a few days you can shave again ;-).
